Flavours of Myanmar Cuisine

Foodies call Myanmar cuisine the “last frontier” for Asian foods. Owing to its geographic location, Burmese cuisine has been influenced by Chinese cuisine, Indian cuisine and Thai cuisine. There is no better way to experience a dynamic culture than through a dedicated cooking tour to savor its tapestry of tastes, colors and smells!

The cooking school provides activities and classes to introduce Myanmar cuisine and culture to tourists and travelers.

The class starts early in the morning with a visit to the market. Unlike a typical cooking class in which you are taken around and shown various local fruits and veggies, you will receive a bamboo shopping basket with a parasol and a shopping list in both English and Burmese, to help navigate the marketplace. You will learn how to ask the vendors whether they have an item, how much it is, and bargain to meet your budget. It is delightful to interact with local vendors, and spend time with the ladies in the market as they try to understand your attempts at Burmese.

The classes are conducted by William Myatwuuna, an experienced chef. You will be fascinated by the real-life stories he shares with you based on his first-hand experiences.

Afterwards, when the shopping basket is full of fresh ingredients, you will head to the local monastery to give alms to the monks. You will also have the opportunity to meet the master monk and ask him some questions regarding Buddhism in Myanmar.

A visitor gave alms to the monks in the local monastery.

The six-hour cooking class covers 10 dishes including a booklet which has all of the recipes typed out with detailed instructions. Mr. William has a wide selection of menus and recipes to cater to most diet restrictions including various levels of vegetarians such as Vegan, Lacto Vegetarian, Ovo Vegetarian, Lacto-ovo vegetarian, Pollotarian, Pescatarian (Pescetarian) and Flexitarian.

The cooking class takes place in the garden of a lovely villa in a suburb of Yangon about 30-45 minutes from downtown.
