2017 in Retrospect: Year of Sustainable Development

2017 was declared by the UN as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This provided a unique opportunity for the tourism industry to increase its contribution to sustainability and to raise awareness about the industry’s commitment to sustainable development.

As Asia's leading Destination Management Company (DMC), we are committed to operating a business model that is both socially and environmentally responsible. Since established, ASIA DMC has made every effort to empower our staffs, partners and guests to practice positive sustainability standards throughout the region.

2017 was a spectacular year for ASIA DMC, as we celebrated 20 years in business with some notable achievements in the field of sustainability, especially through our HG Foundation.  Here are just some our successful activities:

"Roots and Fruits" Campaign

We kicked off the year by introducing our ground-breaking tree planting initiative, known as the "Roots and Fruits" Campaign, across 9 locations where the company operated in South East Asia. Hundreds of fruit trees have been planted across remote, socially deprived areas. Each tree can provide the local community with up to 150 pounds of fresh fruit a year and absorb up to 1 ton of CO2 in its lifetime.

GREENoffice Program

We have always prided ourselves on running lean and efficient operations, but our GREENoffice program took this to the next level.

In order to ‘jump start’ the conversation, we put 183 team members of all levels, representing no less than five different businesses, through an awareness training program. In the process we set ourselves some tough targets of saving energy and water, recycling, purchasing environmentally preferable products, and raising awareness of environmental issues.

Each office in our building has a GREEN Champion that helps to keep our GREEN Spirit alive daily. We further have a GREEN Ambassador that represents each one of our businesses. We meet regularly to brainstorm ideas on how we can become more eco-friendly, not just in our professional lives but also our personal.

Action for a Green Halong 2017

In August 2017, ASIA DMC participated in the third event in the “Action for a Green Ha Long” conservation initiative, which is dedicated to the preservation of the Ha Long Bay ecosystem. This coastal clean-up event included collecting trash and raising awareness of environmental conservation, with the overall aim of maintaining the quality of the destination, creating longer-term jobs, boosting state revenue and promoting green business practices.

ASIA DMC is proud to participate and support initiatives like these, contributing our voice and resources where appropriate. The success of “Action for a Green Ha Long” reaffirms our commitment to environmental protection - a fundamental part of our sustainable tourism vision.

Achieves anniversary CSR milestone with pioneering Travelife Partnership

In our 20th anniversary year, ASIA DMC was awarded "Partner" status with Travelife, the leading training, management and certification initiative for tourism companies. This demonstrates our on-going commitment to environmental and social sustainability.

Several forward-thinking initiatives have been undertaken to meet Travelife’s high standards, including reducing the company's energy use, only using sustainable suppliers, minimizing the use of plastic bottles, and implementing child and animal welfare policies. We also plan to roll out a carbon offsetting project for our leisure guests.

Develop the “Animal Welfare Map”

ASIA DMC is developing a new interactive “Animal Welfare Map” to empower our partners and guests to make ethical decisions during their vacations.

This innovative online map lists more than 75 animal attractions, including zoos, safaris and conservation centres in five Southeast Asian countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Using a traffic light system, ASIA DMC’s Animal Welfare Map identifies which sites are “Promoted” (green), “Under Review” (amber) and “Not Promoted” (red).

When released, the Animal Welfare Map will be an important social and environmental initiative and a major milestone for ASIA DMC.
