Loi Krathong – Festival of Light in Thailand

One of the most important and picturesque festivals in Thailand is the evening of Loy Krathong, the “Festival of Lights”, when people gather around lakes, rivers and canals to pay respects to the Goddess of Water.

Beautiful lotus shaped rafts, decorated with candles, incense and flowers will be released onto the water. The occasion occurs on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month. This year, it will occur on 3rd November.

Besides the water festivities, Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai also features floating lanterns (or sky lanterns). Large paper lanterns that float up into the sky just as a hot air balloon does. Seeing thousands of these launched into the air at once is truly magical.

Joining the local festivities of the Loy Krathong and taking part in beautiful traditions will be meaningful and unforgettable highlights. The cool weather during this part of the year also makes it a wonderful time to explore deeper in Thailand.
