Lopburi – Monkey Banquet Festival in Thailand

In central Thailand’s provincial capital of Lopburi, about 150 kilometers North of Bangkok, the last Sunday in November is reserved for the Lopburi Monkey Banquet. The world’s wildest party is held in honor of these long-tailed macaques, which have become integrated into local society.

According to the local faith, the Macaques are descendants of Hanuman – a monkey king from Hindu scripture. And they believe that feeding them brings good luck. In addition to the banquet, the festival also has live performances and dances with monkeys participating throughout.

Lopburi is not only famous for its Monkey Festival, but it also belongs to the list of oldest cities in Thailand. It is home to some spectacular ruins and top attractions, including King Narai’s Lopburi Palace and Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, a historic temple.
