Myanmar Extends e-Visa to Indian Border

Two more land checkpoints, both on the border with India, have been added for travellers applying for Myanmar’s eVisas.

The eVisa service is applicable for travel to Myanmar through three international airports — Yangon, Nay PyiDawand Mandalay — three land checkpoints between Thailand and Myanmar, plus the two additions on the border with India.

The eVisa applies to both tourist and business visits and is available for all international travellers and Indians at the two overland border checkpoints.

The two India-Myanmar checkpoints are Tamu-Moreh and Rih Khaw Dar-Zokhawthar. The Tamu-Moreh checkpoint connects Myanmar’s upper Sagaing Region with Manipur State of India, while The Rih Khaw Dar-Zokhawthar checkpoint connects Chin State with India’s Mizoram State.

Both are busy corridors for Indian tourists and traders, but there have been security risks in the areas. Irrawaddy noted that there have been frequent clashes between rebel groups and Myanmar’s military that disrupted cross-border trade in the past.

Earlier this week, Myanmar has also extended its visa-free offer to Hong Kong and Macau travellers. When visa-free travel was introduced to ASEAN member countries (Singapore. Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam), the tourism industry in Myanmar witnessed an increase in visits from those nations.
