The Ruby land of Mogok Reopens to Visitors

Located 200km to the North of Mandalay, the “Ruby land” of Mogok, which is famous for supplying 90% of world’s finest rubies as well as an affluence of other precious stones, has officially reopened to visitors.

However, tourists planning to visit still need to acquire a travel permit and travel with a licensed guide.

As spectacular as the gemstones of Mogok are, the town’s picturesque valley surrounded by golden pagoda spires is also a sight to behold. The golden stupas of Phaung Daw Oo and Paw Daw Mu pagodas, associated with the famous monk known as Mogok Sayadaw, can be found strewn atop sharp inclines on Daw Nan Kyi mountain. The tranquil Mogok Lake can be found adjacent to the city, and there is also a little-known World War II veteran cemetery built in the 19th century that is located just outside of the town.
