Angkor tops world tourist landmarks

TripAdvisor announced the winners of its Travellers’ Choice awards for Landmarks, Tuesday naming Angkor Wat, Cambodia, as the world top choice.

Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for landmarks, worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period. The awards recognise 706 landmarks in 82 countries.

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia, led the top 10 Best Landmarks in the World ranking, the first time the World Heritage site has been recognised as the world top landmark by TripAdvisor reviewers.

Others on the top 10 list:

  1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre – Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
  2. Mezquita Cathedral de Cordoba – Cordoba, Spain
  3. St. Peter’s Basilica – Vatican City, Italy
  4. Taj Mahal – Agra, India
  5. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood – St Petersburg, Russia
  6. Great Wall at Mutianyu – Beijing, China
  7. Machu Picchu – Machu Picchu, Peru
  8. Plaza de Espana – Seville, Spain
  9. Duomo di Milano – Milan, Italy

The global top 10 list had three landmarks from Asia. Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, standing tall as the best in the world, with India’s Taj Mahal ranked fifth and the Great Wall of China in seventh spot.

  8. Cu Chi Tunnels – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

  10. Kinkakuji Temple – Kyoto, Japan
