Khau Vai Love Market where ex- lovers reunited

The Khau Vai Love Market where you can find the inconclusive love affair and reunions, the anxious wait of lovers is Vietnam’s most authentic and exciting ethnic minority festivals.

Nho Que River, Ha Giang

Khau Vai love market is a popular attraction in Ha Giang, even when it is held only once a year on the 27th of the third lunar month  in Khau Vai Commune, Meo Vac District in the northern most province of Vietnam, Ha Giang. The festival this year will be held on April 23. Unlike any other markets, Khau Vai Love Market is extraordinary and remarkable because the people coming here do not sell or buy any goods.  Instead, it is the dating place for ex-lovers who fell in love but could not have a marriage.

Khau Vai Commune

Legend said that a couple from different tribes deeply fell in love with but were forbidden to be together. A violent conflict later occurred between the two tribes and the couple decided to part ways with broken hearts to stop the fierce battle. They promised to meet once every year in the local market in Khau Vai commune on the 27th of the third lunar month.

On this occasion, local ethnic people put on their best traditional costumes to go to the market, where they have chance to meet with their ex-lovers, talk about their current marriages and warm up their lost love. Many husbands and wives arrive at the market together before they both seek their past partners among the crowd. Local people believed that they do not need to be angry or jealous because the meeting at the market is just a temporary moment and does not influence their daily lives or relationship.
