Myanmar’s First Cable Car to Open in December

The Kyaikhteeyoe Cable Car in Kyaikhto, Myanmar’s Mon State, is now 90 per cent finished and expected to open in the first week of December.

The first such service in Myanmar, this new attraction will connect Yathaetaung and Kyaikhteeyoe hills, providing a new way for locals and visitors to access Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, which is also known as the “Golden Rock Pagoda” due to the gravity-defying boulder that balances precariously on the edge of the cliff.

Located about 200km by road from Yangon, this site is one of Myanmar’s most famous tourist and religious destinations. Once launched, the cable car will transport locals, visitors and Buddhist pilgrims from the pagoda’s car park to the top of the hill in eight-person gondolas.

Myanmar nationals will pay MMK3,000 (US$2.20) while international tourists will pay US$5.
