Plan to upgrade Thandwe airport

The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism is looking to further expand Thandwe Airport in southern Arakan State. The plan facilitates foreign tourists wishing to visit nearby Ngapali Beach.

Tourism officials are planning to expand Thandwe Airport in Rakhine State to increase the airport capacity on handling international flights, Irrawaddy reported. At the moment, the airport only accepts domestic flights and the extension plan was revealed during the meeting with hotels and tourism minister and a local hotel business association. The airport is the main gateway to Ngapali Beach, the most famous award-winning beach in Myanmar, and the airport runway was upgraded in 2016. The plan is to receive direct international flights to attract more foreign tourists to the beach without transferring in Yangon.
